Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Two devotees were crushed to death under a wheel of the temple car during the annual car festival of the Sri Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari Temple at Tiruvanaikoil here on Tuesday.

While one of the victims was identified as Indrani (50), a Tiruchi Corporation sanitary worker, the other was Vijay alias Vijayan (56), who owned a bicycle shop at Tiruvanaikoil. Kannan of Tiruvanaikoil, who sustained injuries, was hospitalised.

`Parihara puja'

Priests performed a `parihara puja' in front of the temple car, which was stopped following the incident. The procession resumed later.

The accident occurred moments after the main temple car, carrying the processional deity Sri Jambukeswarar, was drawn from the `Ther Nilai.'

Bid to break

coconut

Eyewitnesses said after the temple car entered the `Vadakku Ul Veethi', Indrani attempted to break a coconut in front of it. Vijayan tried to stop her.

In the melee, both fell down and came under the iron wheel.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, Collector Ashish Vachhani and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments officials participated in the car festival, part of the annual `Panguni Peruvizha' of the temple, which commenced on March 15.
