NEW DELHI : After eclipsing the proceedings in both Houses of Parliament for the fifth consecutive day, the Nandigram violence on Tuesday forced the adjournment of the Lok Sabha a day ahead of schedule for recess. The Rajya Sabha was forced to adjourn for the day. Announcing the adjournment decision after successive disruptions, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said that since no meaningful discussion was possible the House would meet again only on April 26. The announcement came when the House met after the third adjournment; the first two over Nandigram and the last over the discussion of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. Members from Tamil Nadu and Congress MPs from Karnakata ignoring the Speaker's appeal to discuss the Cauvery issue in a constructive, dispassionate and responsible manner objected to it being raised. Earlier, the Nandigram issue stalled proceedings in both Houses during question hour, resulting in quick adjournments. When the Houses met again at noon, the Government managed to push through much of the business. While the Opposition submitted a notice for adjournment of the Lok Sabha, in the Rajya Sabha it wanted a discussion on the issue. The Lok Sabha witnessed a vociferous altercation between the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party over Leader of the Opposition L. K. Advani's comment that ``State terror was let loose on farmers'' in Nandigram. Even before Mr. Advani moved his notice for adjournment of the Lok Sabha to discuss the issue, Mr. Chatterjee said: ``The Deputy Speaker has given his ruling and it stands. There is no question of reviewing it and the adjournment notice cannot be admitted.'' Mr. Advani persisted stating that he had submitted his notice only on Tuesday and it pertained to the "failure" of the Centre to prevent the Nandigram incident when "State terror" was unleashed on farmers. This led to a turmoil forcing the second adjournment. Similar scenes were enacted in the Rajya Sabha, which was first adjourned for an hour at 11 a.m.
