ADILABAD: There is need for a thorough investigation and analysis into the issue of animals dying after grazing on residual Bt cotton crop in Adilabad district. Laboratory analysis of six samples of Bt cotton residual crop, ruminal contents and organs of two dead bullocks from Adilabad district have not served to clear the issue. However, a letter from Animal Husbandry Department shows that the Bt Cotton samples contained Hydro Cyanic (HCN) acid. The letter has not shown the proportion in which the `toxin' was present in the plant samples. The ruminal contents of these animals were not found to contain the HCN toxin, according to the letter. In the wake of reports of animals dying after grazing on residual Bt cotton crop in a few mandals in the district, a team of officials from the department from Hyderabad had also conducted investigation in mandals from where animals were reported to have died.
