Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE: All 18 post offices of Mangalore subdivision will be computerised by the end of this financial year, N.R. Visalatchy, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, said at the quarterly "Dak Adalat" held here on Tuesday. The postal operations had been computerised. Steps were being taken to computerise the savings bank operations of the Postal Department, she said, adding that computerised passbooks would be issued to new customers and gradually old passbooks would be converted. Three complaints were received at the adalat.
Complaints
The first complaint related to unwarranted behaviour of a Sub Post Master. An enquiry had been ordered into the matter, Ms. Visalatchy said. To a complaint about delay in the payment of speed post money order, she said that the delay was because the order was dispatched from Bangalore in the early hours of the day instead of the previous night. The third complaint was about the delay in encashment of an N.S.E certificate. The customer had purchased the certificate at a post office in Thane, Maharashtra, and wanted encashment in Mangalore. Ms. Visalatchy said the department had an elaborate procedure to verify the claimant in such cases. Although this caused some delay to customers, it was meant to ensure that money reached the right person, she said. She requested customers to submit their certificates at least a month in advance if they wanted to claim encashment in a different location. In this case, the delay occurred at the Thane Central Division. The payment had been made to the customer, she added. Responding to the concerns raised about the merger of Jeppu, Mangaladevi and Mahakalipadapu post offices in the city, she said the matter was under consideration. No decision had been taken yet. The department had to consider the proposal since it had received vacation notices at Mangaladevi and Mahakalipadapu buildings, she said. There was also a norm that stipulated post offices to be located at a distance of 2 km within city limits. These post offices were located closer, she said. She announced that the department had launched a telemedicine scheme in association with Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore. Under the scheme, patients could send their medical records to the telemedicine centre of the hospital through the head post office in the city. Through a web-based application, the medical details would be sent to the hospital. The advice given by the doctors would then be delivered to the customer within 24 hours, she said.
