Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday remained unfazed by the criticism against his remarks on the Babri Masjid demolition and said the Gandhi family did not need to prove its credibility.
He said his criticism of the Congress alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1996 as a sellout did not mean that he was against all tie-ups but ruled out its coming together with the BSP.
"Opponents may say whatever they want. I have said only what my father had said," Mr. Gandhi told reporters in this village in Moradabad district as his three-day roadshow ahead of the Assembly elections came to an end.
Mr. Gandhi on Monday said the Babri Masjid would not have been demolished had the Gandhi family been active in politics at that time.
The Samajwadi Party said the process of demolition started during the regime of Rajiv Gandhi itself and it culminated during P.V. Narasimha Rao's rule.
CPI (M)'s displeasure
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) expressed displeasure over Mr. Gandhi's remarks saying there was no point in raising this historical question now. "We believe that the government at that time did not carry out the responsibility which it should have done," CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury said.
