Bills for subject committees

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Assembly on Tuesday referred two Bills to its subject committees — one to introduce a cess on textiles to finance welfare measures for handloom workers and the other to include new provisions in the Acts for making Government law officers accountable for any loss they may cause to the Government.

No cut in Plan size

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac reiterated on Tuesday that the Government proposed no cut in the Plan size this year. Replying to a debate on the Kerala Appropriation (Vote-on-Account) Bill, the Minister said it would not, however, be possible to spend some of the budgeted funds.

Minister orders probe

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has asked Rajan Khobragade, Special Secretary, Health, to find out the veracity of the complaint of Salamma, the grandmother of the HIV-positive children Benson and Bency of Kollam, according to which, middlemen were appropriating the assistance meant for the children. She has asked the officer to submit the report on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

Sabarimala festival

Thiruvananthapuram: The Sabarimala temple will be opened for the festival of the Malayalam year of 1182 at 5.30 p.m. on Thursday. The festival flag will be hoisted between 9.40 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. on Friday. Neyyabhishekam will be performed in the morning and Padipuja at dusk from March 23 to 31.The shrine will be closed at 10 p.m. on April 1. — Special Correspondent

Bombs recovered

TIRUR: Five country bombs were recovered from under the Kundanathukadavu bridge at Chembra near here on Tuesday. Children angling in the river found the bombs wrapped in silver foil. The bomb squad and the dog squad of the police rushed to the site and removed the bombs. They later defused the explosives. Two weeks ago, five country-made bombs were recovered from Peruvazhiyambalam near here. The bombs were found abandoned by the main road. The police said they had intensified the investigation into the cases. — Staff Reporter

Takes charge

Thiruvananthapuram: P.K. Madhu has taken charge as Superintendent, Vigilance and Security Police, of the Travancore Devaswom Board. His appointment follows the High Court's direction that an IPS officer should hold the post. Prior to it, he was SP, Eastern Region (Kottayam), of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau. — Special Correspondent

Kozhikode: The former State general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party P.C. Mohanan has been nominated all-India secretary of the Kisan Morcha by its national president Vinod Pandey, said a press release here on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter

PDP campaign for release of Maudany

KOLLAM: People's Democratic Party (PDP) district president Mylacaud Shah will lead a vehicle campaign in the district to press for the release of party leader Abdul Nasir Maudany from the Coimbatore prison. District secretary Sabu Kottarakara said here on Tuesday that the campaign would start from Sasthamcotta on March 21 and culminate at Kottarakara on March 27. March 31 marks the ninth year of Mr. Maudany's incarceration. — Staff Reporter

MBA interview at TKM

KOLLAM: The second phase of the group discussion and interview for the MBA admission to the TKM Institute of Management for the year 2007-2009 will be held at the institute from 10.30 a.m. on April 1 and 2. Those who had registered a composite score of 550 and above in the Management Aptitude Test conducted by the All India Management Association at the National level during February 2007 are eligible to apply.

KOLLAM: The Chamayavilakku festival of the Chavara Major Kottankulangara Sridevi Temple will be held on March 24 ad 25. For the festival, men doll up as women to take part in the ritual of carrying lamps. Hundreds of men participate in the ritual, which is held after sunset. - Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

KASARAGOD: An eight-year-old child died and four others of a family were injured in a car accident at Madgoa on Monday night. According to the police, the car in which they were travelling lost control and overturned.

The police identified the child as K.C. Sanil. His father, A. Hamsa; mother, Mimuna; sister Faisa, 10, and brother Fazil, 3, who were injured in the accident were admitted to a private hospital at Managalapuram. Mr. Hamsa was a contractor at Goa. — Staff Reporter

Contempt case

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar of Mahatma Gandhi University to appear in person before the Court on March 28 in connection with a contempt of court case. The contempt of court petition was filed by Antony of Kottayam. According to him, despite the Court order not to publish the rank-list of the candidates for the Assistant Grade posts, the University published the list. — Staff Reporter
