Veterinary university to be set up

Special Correspondent

C. Divakaran

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is preparing a draft Bill to set up a veterinary university at Pookode, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Civil Supplies C.Divakaran has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Tuesday, Mr. Divakaran said that an expert committee formed by the Government to study the feasibility for setting up the university submitted its report in April last year and the Veterinary Secretary had been appointed as special officer.

Setting up of the university would help to coordinate research activities. A breeding policy would be formulated within a fortnight. The functioning of milk cooperatives would be streamlined and expanded, he said.

The Kerala Registration of Marriage (Common) rules would come into force within two months, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty said.

According to the rules, all marriages should be registered in the local body institutions.

The draft rules were published on November 16, 2006, to invite suggestions of the public.

Steps had been taken to streamline the conduct of grama sabhas and check irregularities in the selection and preparation of the list of beneficiaries, he said.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that he expressed the Government's unwillingness to the Centre to introduce contributory pension scheme for State Government employees.

Mr.Achuthanandan said that the Government had sought an explanation from the former Devaswom Principal Secretary E.K. Bharat Bhushan for making public statements against Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran.

A decision would be taken on getting the explanation. He said the Government had no plans to hike the pension for freedom fighters.
