Pay hike allowed

Teachers drop move to boycott SSC exam

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union on Tuesday decided not to go ahead its plan to boycott SSC examination following discussions with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. Dr. Reddy agreed to study the issue of unified service rules for teachers and offered to solve other problems. — Special Correspondent

Two die in cracker unit explosion

NELLORE: Two persons were charred to death on the spot while eight others sustained burn injuries in a cracker unit explosion at Chillakur outskirts of Gudur mandal on Tuesday. According to the police, M. Raju (18) of East Godavari district and Sheik Rafi (25) of Gudur were burnt to death. The condition of two out of the eight injured persons is said to be very critical. — Staff Reporter

Five killed as lorry overturns

ONGOLE: Five workers were killed and 23 others were injured when the lorry in which they were travelling turned turtle at Venkatadripalem village in Yerragondapalem mandal of Prakasam district on Tuesday. According to reports, 35 agricultural workers were travelling sitting on the banana bunches they had harvested and loaded onto the lorry, for transporting from Ganjivaripalle to Vijayawada. — Special Correspondent

Generator donated to hospital

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam has inaugurated the Rs.8-lakh generator at the Government General Hospital here on Tuesday. The 125 KVA capacity unit was donated by Reliance Industries.

Addressing a meeting on the occasion, the Collector said that several philanthropic public were coming forward to extend the necessary support to the hospital.

Kakinada: The chief executive of East Godavari district Wipro consumer care L.G. Babu has distributed prizes to the winners of the whiz-kidz (well baby show) organised at the Nalanda Vidyaniketan premises here last night. In the first category of 2-3 years, Phani Soumikini has bagged the first prize while Sindhuvi and A. Babi secured second and third prizes.

Blood donation camp held

Kakinada: As many as 54 volunteers of Sri Viswa Vignana Vidya Adhyatmika Peetham Pithapuram have donated blood at the special camp organised by the Peetham on the occasion of Telugu New Year day. The Rotary blood bank and Umar Alisha rural development trust have jointly organised the blood donation camp. Jehera Begum, mother of Umar Alisha, chief of the Peetham has inaugurated the camp.

Seven held for cockfights

KHAMMAM: Seven persons were arrested in raids conducted against organisers of cockfights in the villages of Vemsoor mandal on Tuesday. They seized four motorcycles also. Similar raids were conducted in Ravikampadu village of Kallur mandal. But the organisers ran away at the sight of the police. - Staff Reporter

15 shops looted

KHAMMAM: Fifteen shops were looted by a gang of dacoits in Julurpadu village on Monday night.

The dacoits broke open the locks of the shops on the main road and decamped with valuables. In some shops where they could get money, they did not touch any other articles including colour TVs. The police launched a hunt for the dacoits. - Staff Reporter
