Assembly mourns former Speaker

Narayana Rao described as a `humanist'

HYDERABAD: The Assembly condoled the death of former Speaker G. Narayana Rao who died after prolonged illness on Monday.

The House was adjourned for the day after the members, cutting across party lines, expressed grief at the demise of the former Speaker. Recalling the services he rendered to the society by launching schemes like Apatbandhu ambulance and blood bank, they conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family.

Moving the condolence motion, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy described Narayana Rao as a "humanist" who was sensitive and never hurt the feelings of anyone with his conduct.

`Good politician'

Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu said Narayana Rao not only earned a reputation for himself but also brought laurels to the Chair with his impartial conduct.

TRS floor leader G. Vijayarama Rao and member N. Narasimha Reddy recalled the former Speaker's contribution to Telangana struggle.

State BJP president B. Dattatreya also condoled the death of the former Speaker saying that he had lost a close friend. CPI floor leader Chada Venkat Reddy, M.A. Gafoor (CPI-M), G. Kishan Reddy (BJP) and others condoled the former Speaker's death. Senior leaders including K. Rosaiah, J. Purushottam Rao, M. Satyanarayana Rao, K. Jana Reddy, Y. Ramakrishnudu, Paturi Ramaiah and Govind Naik recalled their association with Mr. Narayana Rao.

Meanwhile, Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy, the Chief Minister, Mr. Naidu, PCC president K. Keshava Rao and other senior leaders visited Narayana Rao's house and laid wreaths. The body of Narayana Rao was cremated at Panjagutta in the evening.
