MADURAI: Mobile phone handsets of different manufacturers, but there is only one charger. Sounds interesting? This is exactly what a Madurai youth has made.

A.R. Ashok Kumar of Sithalangudi near here has developed a charger that is compatible with almost all models of handset.

While the power plug remains common, four detachable sockets are to be used to match the handset. He calls it a "hi-tech multi-function mobile phone charger."

A graduate in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mr. Kumar claims that his charger model is the first of its kind.

"It is my own concept. I have seen people carrying more than one mobile phone. I thought a common charger would lessen their burden. It took me less than a week to develop this."

He has also extended the concept of common charger to cars.

"It will take less than 30 minutes for the battery to gain full charge. There will be no change in power consumption. The manufacturing cost is Rs. 120 (Rs. 50 more for car chargers)," he says, adding that he is ready to make such chargers for others on order with a guarantee of six months.

His earlier "inventions" include a `multi-channel distribution box' that minimises power transmission losses and a unit that will re-charge wristwatch cells. "I invent novel electrical gadgets to eke out a living. The inspiration came from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who wants the youth to dream and achieve."

Mr. Kumar says that he can invent more if the Government could support his ventures that focus on power conservation models.

He can be contacted at 9944565527.
