DMK's position on Cauvery contradictory, says Jayalalithaa
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Jayalalithaa, on Tuesday accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of taking "contradictory" stances on the issue of getting the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) gazetted.
In a statement here, she said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had not taken any step to ask the Centre to gazette the final order and set up the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
On opinions expressed by legal experts K. Parasaran and P.P. Rao that it might not be appropriate for any State Government at this stage to request the Centre to issue a notification under Section 6 of the Inter-State Water Disputes Act 1956 before the three-month time expired, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the DMK Government had not taken any step to submit a review petition under Section 5 (3) of the Act though 45 days had passed since the tribunal gave its final order.
However, the DMK when it was in opposition adopted a resolution at its general council meeting on July 29, 1991 urging the then Central Government to take steps to get the CWDT's interim order gazetted, she recalled.
