"Women's education has multiplier effect"
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: Education of women is an important tool to achieve gender equality, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala has said.
The Governor, who was addressing the convocation of Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts & Science for Women here recently, said educating a woman had a multiplier effect in society as it leads to educating the entire family
Literacy and education pave the way for eliminating discrimination against women. "Mere graduation will not suffice. You should all plan for bigger things and should specialise in your field," he urged the students. He also asked the students to help educate girl children in rural areas as well as school and college dropouts. The Governor presented degrees to 293 undergraduate students from different streams, including biochemistry, microbiology, psychology, computer science, computer applications, corporate secretaryship, commerce and BBA. He also conferred degrees on 46 post-graduate students in M.Sc (IT), MA (HRM), bioinformatics and applied microbiology. Students who obtained university ranks were also felicitated.
