Centre's plea to court

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Union Government on Tuesday urged the Delhi High Court to decide expeditiously on a public interest litigation petition challenging the continuation of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director P. Venugopal in the post even after his retirement, saying its pendency had adversely affected the functioning of the institute.

Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam made the request to a Division Bench comprising Justices Swatanter Kumar and H.R. Malhotra.

Citing an example to highlight the deteriorating conditions at the institute, Mr. Subramaniam submitted that a judge's wife was recently operated upon there under torchlight. The petitioner, a non-governmental organisation — Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) — has challenged the continuation of Dr. Venugopal in the post.

Counsel for petitioner Prashant Bhushan submitted that the Centre failed to take any action against Dr. Venugopal and he was still being allowed to continue as Director as well as a Professor in the Department of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.
