CHENNAI : Chennai Metrowater has received nine bids from consultancy firms for preparing a detailed project report for the 100-million-litre-a-day desalination plant to be set up at Nemmeli 35 km south of Chennai. A Metrowater official told The Hindu that the tenders were being evaluated for technical competence, company experience and lowest price bid. Companies that have applied for the consultancy include Mecon Limited, Gherzi Eastern Limited of Mumbai and Stup Consultants Private Limited of Chennai. The bids would be scrutinised in about a month. Later, the company would have to present the detailed project report along with the bid documents in about five months, the official said. The project report would comprise price estimate, details on raw water quality, various units to be constructed, the recommended places for the units and the amount and discharge point of the waste water generated. About 40 acres of land have been identified for the desalination plant, he said. Funds for the project would be sought from the Central Government on the basis of the project report submitted. Tenders would again be floated for executing the project within 18 months, the official said. Unlike the desalination project in Minjur recently taken up and owned by IVRCL Infrastructures and Projects Limited for the next 25 years, Chennai Metrowater would own the desalination plant in Nemmeli. It may be recalled that during foundation laying ceremony for the Minjur plant recently, Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin said the Rs.1,000-crore grant for desalination, announced by Union Minister P. Chidambaram earlier, would be used for setting up the plant in south Chennai. Meanwhile, the companies for consultancy to monitor work progress of the IVRCL were also under scrutiny.
