Two held in case of obscene SMS-MMS

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI : Police arrested two persons here on Tuesday in connection with a case involving the sending of obscene messages and pictures through mobile phone to a woman. (Short messaging service, or SMS, is used to send text, and Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS, is used to send pictures.)

Based on a complaint from Suraksha Giri of Raja Annamalaipuram, Commissioner of Police Letika Saran directed the Central Crime Branch police to register a case. Assistant Commissioner of Police (cyber crime wing) M. Paneerselvam and his team conducted an investigation, which led to the arrest of M. Sasikumar (25) of Okkiyam Thuraipakkam.

Sasikumar was employed in the office of Suraksha Giri's husband D.V. Giri . He had allegedly purchased a SIM card from a dealer in Alwarpet by furnishing a photograph and address proof particulars of Mr. Giri. He forged the signature of Mr. Giri in the application.

Investigation revealed that after sending the obscene SMS to Ms. Giri, the accused destroyed the SIM card. Police arrested Nizamudeen (21), the shop-owner, on charges of issuing the SIM card to Sasikumar without verification. Police registered a case under Sections 507 IPC and 67 I.T. Act 2000, 419, 465, 507 IPC and 67 I.T Act read with 109 IPC against Sasikumar and Nizamudeen. They were produced before the Saidapet court which remanded them to judicial custody.
