48 counters to collect road tax

Payment can be made from March 26 to April 10 For vehicles more than 15 years old, green tax of Rs. 500 for two-wheelers and Rs. 1,000 for light motor vehicles should be remitted.

CHENNAI : The Transport Department will operate 48 counters in the city to collect road tax for non-transport vehicles for 2007-08. The collection will begin on March 26 and the last date for payment is April 10.

A release from the Transport Department said the counters would function at all Regional Transport Offices in the city — East at Pulianthope and its unit office at Tondiarpet, West at K. K. Nagar, Central at Ayanavaram, North at Perambur, North West at Anna Nagar, South at Tiruvanmiyur and its unit office at R. K.Nagar, Mandaveli and South West at Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam.

Apart from the RTO offices, the counters would also function at Secretariat Police Station at Fort St. George; Fire and Rescue Services Station in the High Court complex; Jai Auto, West Mambalam; Scooter House, Nandanam; two counters each at Vani Mahal and G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar; Race Course, Guindy; Automobile Association of Southern India, Anna Salai; MTC depot at Perambur; two counters each at the MTC depot in Anna Nagar East and West; two counters each in Avvai Home, Adyar, and P. S. Higher Secondary School, R. K. Mutt, Mylapore; YMCA, Royapettah; and the State Transport Authority office, Ezhilagam, Chepauk.

For the non-transport vehicles more than 15 years old, the owner had to pay green tax of Rs 500 for two-wheelers and Rs 1,000 for light motor vehicles, while paying the tax.

The tax would be collected in the counters between 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. on all working days except Sundays and government holidays.

While paying the tax, the owner should produce the original registration certificate and valid insurance certificate besides pollution-under-control certificate.

The tax schedule would be exhibited at all collection counters, the release said.
