CHENNAI:
The Apparel Export Promotion Council (APEC) recently opened its second apparel training and design centre here. The Centre at Mogappair is the 22nd such facility of the Council in the country.
APEC chairman Vijay Aggarwal said there were plans to establish three more training centres in and around Chennai. The target this year was to set up 50 centres in the country to train more personnel and ease the huge manpower shortage facing the readymade garment industry.
A range of courses covering all aspects of the industry from pattern-making, cutting techniques, production supervision to quality control techniques are being offered by the centre. The course fee ranges from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 30,000.
The Mogappair centre has 100 trainees. "We will offer training for nearly 300 persons.
The centre will also offer a short one-month course catering to specific needs of the garment industry," said Mr. Aggarwal. The first centre in Chennai was set up in 1996 at Guindy.
