Clarification

The Secretary, Institute of Public Auditors of India, Chennai Chapter, points out that in the report, `VAT "prompts" changes in I-T Department' (Chennai, March 20, 2007) the reference to Income Tax Department in the headline and text was wrong. It should have been Commercial Taxes Department, which handles State revenues. He said Accountant General S. Murugaiah had clarified that the reference had been made to "enforcement activities." What he had spoken about was "reorientation of the enforcement activities to checking of assessments." — Readers' Editor
