Adapting to change
Government contractors are often accused of being slow in adapting to changes. But of late, cable-laying contractors in the city seem to have become energy-conscious. The other day, labourers engaged in late-night work on the SS Kovil road at Thampanoor were seen digging trenches under Compact Fluorescent (CF) lamps. The white light of CF lamps attracted the attention of passers-by and residents who gathered to witness the scene. The saving on power and the longer life of a CFL are reason enough for contractors to switch over from the power-hungry incandescent bulbs that burn out easily and the fluorescent tubes that are unwieldy for transport.
