MANGALORE: B. Nagaraj Shetty, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, on Tuesday instructed officials of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) Ltd. and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the district during peak hours, especially in the evenings, to help students prepare for examination. Mr. Shetty said in a meeting that the SSLC examination would begin from Wednesday. This would be followed by Pre-University and degree examinations.Unscheduled power cuts in the evenings were creating problems to students. If it continued during the examination, students would suffer, he said. The Government had instructed the power supply corporations in the State to supply nine hours of three-phase power and nine hours of single-phase power to rural areas, Mr. Shetty said, adding that power supply would be cut for six hours in rural areas. The KPTCL and MESCOM should stick to this schedule and ensure that power supply was not interrupted in the evenings, he said.
`Inevitable'
S. Sumanth, Managing Director, MESCOM, said that the company had to follow certain directives of KPTCL and the Government with regard to power supply. Some problems were due to lack of infrastructure. Sometimes it was inevitable to resort to unscheduled power cut during peak hours, he said. Mr. Sumanth said that there was a need for 110-KV power sub-station at Sullia and 220-KV sub-station at Puttur to mitigate power supply-related problems under Puttur sub-division of MESCOM covering Sullia, Puttur and Belthangady taluks. MLAs N. Yogish Bhat, S. Angara, K. Prabhakar Bangera, K. Shakuntala Shetty and Padmanabha Kottari; Sushma Janardhan, president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat; M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner; A.M. Kunjappa, chief executive officer of zilla panchayat; and officials of other Government bodies participated in the meeting.
