TDP stand on Godavari water for city flayed

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has flayed the Telugu Desam Party for opposing a move to divert the Godavari water to meet Hyderabad's drinking needs.

APCC spokesperson N. Tulasi Reddy and Kisan Cell chairman M. Kodanda Reddy at a press conference here on Tuesday said the TDP's opposition to the proposal amounted to betrayal of the interests of the city's residents.

Dr.Tulasi Reddy said that the Government, keeping in view the ever-increasing population of the State Capital, had planned three phases of the Krishna water scheme. Each phase was designed to provide 90 MGD of water for the twin cities.

He said of the 1,480 tmcft Godavari water allocated to the State, 720 tmcft was going waste. This apart, another 200 tmcft floodwater was also flowing into the sea every year. The Government had decided to tap this water and divert part of it to the twin cities.
