Godavari to come from Pranahitha Pranahitha water for twin cities

Special Correspondent

Plan to bring 80 tmc of water from the tributary; tenders to be called for link-up plan

  • New plan to meet city's drinking water requirements up to 2070
  • `A clear GO' on the matter to be issued shortly

HYDERABAD: With apprehensions galore about `tapping Godavari from Yellampalli' in certain quarters, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy clarified here on Tuesday that plans were afoot to tap Godavari water from Pranahitha in Adilabad district.

Water will be lifted from Pranahitha, a tributary of Godavari and a perennial water source flowing in from Maharashtra, to Yellampalli balancing reservoir in Karimnagar district, from where it will flow to the city by gravity, officials said.

"The link-up plan is crucial. Unless the river is brought to Yellampalli, it will not be able to sustain the huge requirement of the State capital in the coming decades," they said.

The Irrigation department was contemplating calling tenders for the link-up plan very soon. Mr. Reddy held a review meeting on various development projects pertaining to the twin cities, including Godavari river water, here on Tuesday.

    Phased manner

The Government was planning to bring in a whopping 80 tmc of Godavari water from Pranahitha in a phased manner to meet the drinking water requirements of the city up to 2070, as against 11 tmc of Krishna water brought in two phases. The Chief Minister directed Irrigation Secretary Heeralal Samaria to issue `a clear GO' on the matter shortly, an official press release said.

Last week, officials of the Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited, a Central Government undertaking which carried out a feasibility study on Godavari water for Greater Hyderabad, put the population projection in the year 2031 at 1.71crores and corresponding drinking water requirement 30 tmc, excluding the water available from existing drinking water sources.

HMWSSB Managing Director K.S. Jawahar Reddy said various reservoir structures en route like mid Manair and Chevella would be utilised for bringing Godavari water.

The Chief Minister directed HMWSSB officials to plan for providing daily water supply in the next six to nine months. Simultaneously, more areas should be brought under the ambit of round-the-clock supplies. He also wanted MCH officials to make all-out efforts in the maintenance of city roads, streetlights and storm water drains.

Various ongoing projects like ORR phase I, IIA and IIB, elevated express highway, flyovers at Langer Houz, Uppal junction and LB Nagar, bus terminus cum commercial complex at Secunderabad, Special Economic Zone at Kokapet and others figured in the meeting.
