Residents satisfied with BESCOM response

Sharath S. Srivatsa

BANGALORE: If the power supply to your house is snapped for any reason, how fast does the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company help you? We spoke to a few who had complained to BESCOM sub-stations on technical problems such as pole fuse snapping, loose contacts, transformer fuse and others during the last week. They said they were satisfied with the action taken. Most said BESCOM responded promptly.

Shekhar Shetty of Ajantha Hotel on M.G. Road said the transformer problem near the hotel is attended to by the BESCOM staff quickly. "Whenever there is power failure for any reason, they act fast enough."

The manager of a private company on Church Street, who did not want to be identified, said his complaints about power failure were attended to quickly. "They could ask us to use our generator. But that does not happen; they are very cooperative."

However, complaints such as burning of meter are a different cup of tea, some consumers said. They even allege sometimes they would have to grease a few low-level palms to get their work done.

People complain of unscheduled power cuts in some areas. "BESCOM can do very little over the transmission line problems, but other routine grievances will be addressed immediately," as BESCOM spokesperson said. He said 90 per cent of all the grievances are solved within the time stipulated by Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC).

BESCOM says people may complain to any of the 39 sub-divisions on its helpline 1917. BESCOM claims to have attended most of the 13,784 complaints in December, 13,102 in January and 11,827 in February.
