Project to improve teaching facilities in medical colleges drawn up

Thiruvananthapuram: A meeting of Principals of all five medical colleges in the State, convened by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, on Tuesday prepared a detailed project to improve the teaching facilities in the colleges as per the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

It was decided at the meeting that appointments will be made to the posts of lecturers, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in accordance with the ratio of students. Steps will be taken to fill the vacancies of nurses and other paramedical staff as well as to create the new posts suggested by the MCI. The Minister also directed the Principals to take decisions on the requirements of each medical college such as the installation of cath lab or CT scan machine.

The Government will hold discussions with the Union Health Ministry on the allocation of more funds in accordance with the number of students given admission to the medical colleges here under Central quota. A project report will be prepared seeking an assistance of Rs.10 crore for each medical college here in the 11th Plan, it was decided. Director of Medical Education Meenu Hariharan was present.
