Protest against killings in Nandigram
Condemning the killing of farmers in West Bengal, the two outfits said the mainstream political parties in the country were working against the interests of farmers and Adivasis. Describing the West Bengal Government as agents of capitalist and imperialist forces, they said, "The ruling forces in the State did not even consider the Constitutional and democratic rights of the poor.''
Four years' RI for CPWD engineer
Special Judge G. P. Mittal also slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on A. K. Srivastava. Srivastava was accused of amassing assets worth Rs. 5.3 lakh disproportionate to the known sources of his income by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government. The case was registered against him 12 years ago. The court had refused to take lenient view while pronouncing the sentence taking into account the attempt by the convict to win over a witness.
Six alleged burglars arrested
According to the police, Deepak, Laxman, Rajesh, Jainath, Manoj and Dharmender frequently came to the Capital from Bihar at night by train and committed burglaries. More than 90 cartons of agricultural pesticides valued at Rs. 3 lakh have been seized, the police said. They took the stolen goods to their native places and sold them.
Four alleged robbers held
The accused have been identified as Prem Chand, Pappu Saini, Gajender Singh and Ramesh. During interrogation, they purportedly confessed to their involvement in robbery cases. According to the police, the accused usually targeted copper-wire manufacturing units, shops and showrooms in the trans-Yamuna area. They disposed of the stolen articles to scrap dealers. One of the alleged receivers of the stolen property has been identified as Yasin Kabari, who has his shop in neighbouring Ghaziabad.
Newborn baby missing
According to the police, Shobha, wife of daily wager Sanjay, gave birth to a boy at the hospital on Sunday. Shortly afterwards, a woman dressed as a nurse took the baby away saying that it needed medical care. The woman then vanished with the baby. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
