Centre steps up efforts to clean up Yamuna

Staff Reporter

Rs.77 crore earmarked for the Action Plan Phase-II

NEW DELHI: Efforts to clean up the Yamuna having failed to show the desired results, the Centre has earmarked Rs.77 crore for the Yamuna Action Plan Phase-II (YAP-II). The additional money will be used to clean up the river in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana during 2007-08.

Water supply

Delhi draws 86 per cent of its water supply from the river, which the Union Government admits has shown "no desired improvement".

Blaming the "phenomenal increase in population and large-scale extraction of water from the river for drinking and other purposes" for adversely impacting the Yamuna, the Union Government is stepping up efforts to clean up the river.

Implementation

Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Namo Narain Meena announced in the Lok Sabha on Monday that for facilitating implementation of YAP-II, a project management consultant comprising a number of experts in the field of environmental pollution control has been appointed.

An integrated action plan has been prepared with a number of agencies identified towards its implementation for undertaking pollution abatement measures in the Yamuna in Delhi. The works under the Yamuna Action Plan in Delhi are also a part of the integrated action plan.

Following the Supreme Court's directions, a three-tier monitoring mechanism had been constituted, which includes an Apex Committee at the Central level, at the level of the Delhi Government and at the implementing agency level.

Pollution

The National River Conservation Directorate under the Ministry has launched a two-phase Yamuna Action Plan at a cost of Rs 1,339 crore to control pollution in the river, of which Rs. 686 crore has been incurred under both the phases of the plan till November 2006.
