MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants' Association has called for withdrawal of one per cent cess levied in the State under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act 1987 on notified agricultural produce. Addressing mediapersons here recently, its secretary, P. Subash Chandra Bose, said that both producers and merchants were facing "innumerable difficulties" owing to various provisions of the Act. He said that the cess was being collected even on produce that was traded outside the markets, besides on those purchased from other States. Other States had established market yards that were spread across 300 acres and had modern facilities for storing the produce, which was lacking here. The Government should restrict the levy of cess on any transaction conducted within market yards having all infrastructure facilities. Mr. Bose said Tamil Nadu was deficient in production of pulses and imported nearly 70,000 tonnes every year through the Tuticorin port.
