dated March 22, 1957: Constitution suspended

President Iskander Mirza took over the administration of West Pakistan under Article 193 of the Constitution on March 21. With this the 17-month-old Khan Sahib Ministry goes out of office. Article 193 can be in force for only two months unless extended by the National Assembly within this period, in which case the suspension of the Constitution can last up to six months. The President's action followed turbulent scenes in the West Pakistan Assembly, mainly due to the tactics adopted by the Muslim League to upset Dr. Khan Sahib's administration. Reports said Dr. Khan Sahib advised the Governor on March 20 to suspend the Constitution as a stable Government had become impossible.
