THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government proposes to revamp the functioning of the Kerala State Handloom Development Corporation (Hanveev) and the Kerala State Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Society (Hantex) to improve design and marketing of handloom products, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim told the Assembly on Wednesday. Responding to a calling attention motion by N. Anirudhan (CPI), Mr. Karim said the Government had already taken steps to involve the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in the designing of handloom products. It had also undertaken a review of the functioning of 433 handloom cooperative societies with the assistance of NABARD and submitted the study report to the Central Government to facilitate easier availability of Central assistance, he said. The Industries Minister said the Government would clamp down on misappropriation of rebate assistance and would give more attention to export development. Responding to another calling attention motion by M. A. Vaheed (Congress), Education Minister M. A. Baby said the Government would examine the demand for setting up a Malayalam University would be examined, but could not be taken till the Government completed the ongoing work on setting up a medical university.
