GUNTUR: Cine writer Suddala Ashok Teja was honoured with this year's `Sahiti Puraskaram' in Guntur in the presence of a galaxy of literary stars, who dished out a sumptuous fare at the Ugadi festivities organised by the city-based literary organisation Sahiti Samakhya on Tuesday night. Words came out like a torrent from Sahasra Avadhani Garikipati Narasimha Rao, verse couplets surged from Nagna Muni and devotional keertans from Malladi brothers. Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandiram was enriched with the presence of leading luminaries, veteran cine director K. Viswanath, writers Nagna Muni, Lalla Devi and Radhasri. Some other invitees Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, Bhavana Chandra and DG of Fire Services A.K. Khan could not make it as their flights were cancelled at the eleventh hour. Audience put behind the delayed start to the programme as the literary luminaries took centre stage. It began with poetry of P.V. Ram Kumar, a physician by vocation and a writer by avocation. He read out a witty poem on the mad urge among the present-day youth to live the great American dream. Then, Nagna Muni came out with his compilation on the present ills plaguing the society, followed by Lalla Devi.
Other awards
The organisers gave away `Ugadi Puraskarams' to Malladi Ram Kumar and Ravi, popularly called Malladi brothers. Sons of Malladi Suri Babu, an All India Radio artiste at Vijayawada, they were chosen for their contribution to classical music. Soon after being felicitated by cine director K. Viswanath and district Collector G. Jayalakshmi, they rendered a Thyagaraja keertana. Others felicitated on the occasion included Doordarshan Kendra station director U.V.S.R. Anjaneyulu and progressive writer and Arasam secretary Penugonda Lakshminarayana. Mr. Viswanath called for revival of Telugu language and literature from the onslaught of English. Samakhya president D.V.S. Ramamurthy and secretary S.V.S. Lakshmi Narayana were present.
