Rajahmundry: Speakers at a seminar on comprehensive HIV prevention and care services have asked the government agencies and also NGOs to understand the health needs of sex workers, including family planning and pregnancy care. The one-day seminar was organised here on Wednesday by Nari Saksham, Care India Foundation and other NGOs for dissemination of information among sex workers.
Community role
After inaugurating the seminar, district leprosy officer and AIDS control society project director Pavan Kumar said that community involvement was important in prevention of HIV/AIDS and sex workers play key role in taking up preventive measures like insisting on the usage of condoms. He said that HIV prevalence among sex workers in the country ranges from 10 to 70 per cent. It was unfortunate that scant attention was being paid to the health needs of sexworkers, he said. Jayasree, project director of Care India, representatives from Non-Government Organisations and others spoke.
