Funds will be used to ensure hygiene in the area

IN DETAIL: The Commissioner of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, P. Manivannan, at a press conference in Hubli on Wednesday.

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation will immediately release Rs. 15 lakh for the improvement of the slaughterhouse and mutton market in Dharwad.

HDMC Commissioner P. Manivannan told presspersons here on Wednesday that he was shocked to see the pathetic condition of the mutton market in Dharwad during his visit to the area on Tuesday.

The amount would be mainly utilised for proper underground drainage system, high-pressure pumps to clean the premises and other requisite equipment.

He said that the condition of the market would improve substantially in 45 days. On the establishment of advanced slaughterhouses in twin cities, he said the proposals in this regard had been sent to the Union Government and the response was awaited.

Opposition

To a query, he said there was opposition to the site chosen for the slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Hubli. Some people and organisations were opposed to setting up of the slaughterhouse near Varur.

There were no clear-cut guidelines on how far the slaughterhouse should be located from a place of religious importance, he said. Mr. Manivannan said future action would be based on the direction from the Centre.

Mr. Manivannan said the corporation had culled stray dogs that proved a threat to the public, while the non-governmental organisations were carrying out sterilisation of dogs.

Health Officer A.C. Swamy said 95 per cent of the pigs in Dharwad and about 60 per cent of them in Hubli had been eliminated.
