ONGOLE: The police whisked away 50 autorickshaw drivers along with two leaders of CITU when they came in a procession to submit a memorandum to the district Collector on various issues. Following a series of fatal road accidents involving autorickshaws in the district, the police had intensified efforts for the last three days to prevent plying of three-wheelers on the national highway. They also booked cases against drivers for overloading, not wearing uniform, lack of insurance etc.
Procession
The CITU led a procession of autorickshaw drivers from Ura tank to Prakasam Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the Collector and urge her to direct the police not to book cases against autorickshaws plying on the national highway. They also wanted to demand auto stands, reduction of insurance premium and resolution of other pending problems relating to autorickshaws. A large contingent of police was deployed at Prakasam Bhavan to handle law and order problem. When the procession reached Prakasam Bhavan, the police refused permission even for the leaders to meet the Collector. After some altercation, the police took into custody CITU leaders K Sreenivasa Rao and G Sreenivasulu along with 50 autorickshaw drivers and whisked them away. The CITU condemned the arrests.
