Bopanna back in Davis Cup squad

NEW DELHI: Rohan Bopanna returned to the Indian Davis Cup team for the Asia-Oceania first-round playoff tie against Kazakhstan to be held at Almaty from April 6 to 8.

Vivek Shokeen and Sunil Kumar make way for Bopanna and Divij Sharan from the four-member squad that lost 1-4 to Uzbekistan at Namangan in February. Sunil Kumar, who had won the doubles with Leander Paes, has been named the fifth member.

The 21-year-old Divij won the National Games and had also reached the semifinals of a $15,000 ITF Futures tournament in Nigeria. He had won two doubles titles in the ITF circuit recently with Navdeep Singh. Nandan Bal and Sandeep Kirtane will be the coaches.

Meanwhile, the All India Tennis Associaiton (AITA) has decided to delay the announcement of the Indian team for the Fed Cup to be held in Christchurchfrom April 18 to 21, as the approval for the US-based Sunitha Rao to represent India is expected from the ITF.
