NEW DELHI: Ronjan Sodhi won the double trap bronze in the World Cup at Santo Domingo on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Sodhi came up with a career best 187 out of 200 to take the third place behind Hakan Dahlby (192) of Sweden and former World champion Daniele De Spigno (188) of Italy. Incidentally, the Swede won the quota place for the Beijing Olympics.
Close race
Sodhi shot a 47 in the final to pip three others from the U.S., China and Finland, who were breathing down his neck, for the bronze medal. He started with a 43 out of 50, but shot impressive rounds of 49 and 48 thereafter to make the final with a career-best 140 out of 150.
First final
This was the first World Cup final and first international individual medal for Sodhi, who had won the team silver in the Asian Games at Doha last year. He has also won team gold medals in the Asian Championships. Sodhi had shot scores ranging from127 to 134 in the World Cups last year and was placed 20th for his best finish.
Rathore to skip events
Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who has already clinched the Olympic quota place, had decided to skip the first two World Cups of the season and focus on the forthcoming World Championship.
The results: Double trap: 1. Hakan Dahlby (Swe) 192 (144); 2. Daniele De Spigno (Ita) 188 (141); 3. Ronjan Sodhi 187 (140).
