BIJAPUR: Many students had to take the SSLC examination sitting on the floor at two centres here on Wednesday as the authorities concerned failed to provide them desks and benches. Over 200 students had to make do without desks and benches at the Kalidas High School and Government School No. 24 in KHB Colony. Sources in the Department of Education said that proper seating arrangements would be provided to all the students for the next examination. Students became anxious when the examination was delayed for about 10 minutes at the Government Boys Junior College centre owing to "interference" by vice-principal N.K. Managonda. He was made in-charge of the centre but relieved from examination duty on Tuesday evening after learning that his daughter is appearing for the examination. The authorities issued order appointing high school section head Geetha Mamadapur in his place. However, Mr. Managonda went to the examination centre citing certain technicalities and this reportedly caused delay in the distribution of answer sheets and question papers. Deputy Director of Public Instruction Hiremath told The Hindu that a how cause notice had been issued to Mr. Managonda asking why he was present in the examination centre although he was not on duty. Four students two in Bijapur and two in Devarahipparagi were debarred for "indulging in malpractices." As many as 10 staff, most of them supervisors, were relieved from examination work as they failed to perform their duty.
