GULBARGA: Eight students who appeared for the SSLC examination in Gulbarga Education District were debarred on Wednesday. As many as 11 students were expelled from the examination centres for allegedly indulging in malpractices and copying during surprise visits by the Special Vigilance Squad of the Education Department. Official sources said that six students had been debarred in Gulbarga City, and one student each expelled in Chitapur and Aland taluks for copying. Apart from this, 11 students were expelled on charges of malpractices, in Gulbarga Education District. The district administration had taken several measures to curb malpractices and mass copying by increasing the presence of police personnel in the examination centres.
Prohibitory orders
Prohibitory orders were clamped near the examination centres to prevent people not connected with examination work from gathering outside. Strict vigil was also maintained at the photo copy centres to prevent leak of question papers. According to information available late in the evening, no incident of leak of question paper was reported in the district. A quick round of the examination centres in Gulbarga City, which had the highest number of 39 examination centres in the district, revealed lack of facilities, particularly in government schools and junior colleges. In at least three examination centres in the city, students were seen taking the examination sitting on the floor owing to lack of enough number of tables and chairs. Mercury shooting to 40 degrees Celsius made matters worse for the students. In other taluks too, students were forced to take the examination sitting on the floor.
Students frisked
In some centres, students were frisked to prevent them smuggling copying material into the halls. According to reports reaching here, no incident of malpractice was reported in Yadgir Education District. For the first time, inter-district vigilance squads were constituted to conduct surprise raids on examination centres.A total of 28,985 students appeared for the examination at 87 centres in Gulbarga Education District, and 8,715 students appeared at 30 centres in Yadgir Education District.
