THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is planning to set up nursing colleges in all the districts of Kerala either directly or under the aegis of various autonomous institutions that run now similar institutions. Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy told the Assembly in reply to a submission by K. V. Kunhiraman (CPI-M) that steps would be taken to start a nursing college in Kasaragod district. The Government had decided to go in for more nursing colleges in view of the high demand for nurses abroad, the Minister said.
Awards
Education Minister M. A. Baby told M. Murali (Congress) that the Government would institute awards for teachers in the higher education sector as part of the golden jubilee of the first elected Government in Kerala. The Government would also draw the attention of the Union Ministry of Human Resources to the need to institute such awards at the national level now that Plus Two courses had been de-linked from schools where teachers were given awards annually, he said.
IPR Ps policy
Law Minister M. Vijayakumar told V. D. Satheesan (Congress) that the Government would come out with a revised Intellectual Property Rights Policy on April 26, the World Intellectual Property Rights Day. Discussions were on with different sections for the formulation of the policy. The UDF Government had issued a draft policy on intellectual property right, but there was the complaint that it was not comprehensive.
Tsunami
Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran told T. N. Prathapan (Congress) that the additional Rs.1 lakh announced by Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan for the next of kin of those killed in the tsunami disaster would be distributed on April 13. The Government, he said, had also decided to construct 1,100 anganawadis in the coastal areas of the State under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Project.
The Government would also implement four projects sanctioned specially by the Prime Minister. These included a project to deposit Rs.51,500 in the name of children of those who lost their lives in the mishap so that they could earn an interest of Rs.300 every month.
There was also a scheme to provide support for social infrastructure and another for an insurance scheme covering 1.5 lakh coastal families in the affected districts, he said.
