Examinations delayed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A mix-up of question papers delayed the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination for about an hour in some schools in the district on Wednesday.

Question papers of Chemistry (old scheme) were found when packets for the day's History examination were opened in 25 schools in Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha at 9.45 a.m., 15 minutes after the `cool-off' time given to students before the start of the examination.

Deputy Director of Education, Ernakulam, Baby Usha Kiran said there was no mistake in the code number, date of examination, subject name and serial numbers given on the question paper cover.

When the packets were opened, the invigilators found that it contained question papers of the Chemistry examination scheduled for Friday. The matter was immediately reported to the Deputy Director of Education.

Ms. Kiran said the question papers were re-sealed immediately. The Education Officer of Kothamangalam was asked to bring extra question papers for distribution in 20 schools where the problem was noticed. On opening the extra packets, the Education Department officials once again found that it contained question papers of the Chemistry examination.

Meanwhile, the Education Officer at Muvattupuzha found that the extra packets available there contained question papers of History. These were distributed to the candidates in five schools in Muvattupuzha. These extra packets were later brought to Kothamangalam for distribution in the 20 schools there.

The confusion led to a delay in the start of the examination for more than an hour. According to official estimates, 88 students had appeared in 25 schools in Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha for the History examination (old scheme).

In Malappuram

Staff Reporter writes from Malappuram: The mix-up of SSLC question papers happened in 16 schools in Malappuram district. A total of 283 question papers of Chemistry (old scheme) examination to be held on Thursday were thus opened. According to the authorities, a fault in coding of the bundles created the problem.

The incident happened when the examiners opened the bundles of History (old scheme, Malayalam) question papers for distribution. The examiners opened the bundles with correct codes. The History question paper carried the code 732 and the code of Chemistry question paper was 744.
