BANGALORE: The Congress staged a walkout in the Legislative Council on Wednesday alleging that the Government has been attempting to mislead the House by presenting "false information" about the funds released and the status of drought relief works undertaken in 128 affected taluks. Responding to a question raised by Basavaraj Bommai of the Janata Dal (United), Minister for Revenue Jagadish Shettar said that the Government had sought Rs. 1,200 crore and 5,74,000 tonnes of foodgrains from the Centre towards drought and flood relief works. But the Centre had only released Rs. 226 crore from the National Calamity Contingency Fund and 50,000 tonnes of foodgrains. It had also released another Rs. 113 crore from the Calamity Relief Fund. Besides the State had released Rs. 277 crore from its coffers. However, the Government had sanctioned 51,614 works and already completed 13,416 of them. It had created "31,70,706 jobs, " Mr. Shettar explained in a written reply. Mr. Bommai, M.P. Nadagouda, Leader of the Opposition H.K. Patil and others said that the Government had only created 31,70,706 mandays and not jobs.
