Hubli boy's rare achievement

HUBLI: The name of Darshan Vimalkumar Lalka, a tenth standard student of Hubli, will be etched on the archival disc related to "Phoenix Mission to Mars" being conducted by NASA, University of Arizona and The Planetary Society of U.S.

Darshan achieved this rare feat for his achievement on computing the accurate densities of nine planets on the basis of a formula called DVD-Triquillibrium, derived by him.

His calculation of the density of Mars as 0.96 (Earth-1) matches NASA's observational results.

Farmer ends life

TUMKUR: A farmer committed suicide at Shivara village in Tumkur district on Wednesday.

Police identified him as Anandakumar (30).

Anandakumar is the third farmer to end his life in Tumkur district in this month. — Staff Correspondent

Industrialists protest

BANGALORE: Small-scale industrialists from different parts of the State on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue here urging the Government to meet their long-pending demands, especially issues related to KSSIDC.

The industrialists said that despite many meetings the issues had not been resolved, and sought the personal intervention of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. — Staff Reporter

Bail plea withdrawn

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has dismissed as withdrawn a bail petition by Jagadish Chidanand Kore, who is accused of shooting his uncle and MLC, Prabhakar Kore.

Opposing the bail, the State submitted that Jagadish was arrested for offences under Sections 307 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code read with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

When the matter came up on Wednesday, Jagadish sought the permission of the court to withdraw his bail plea.

Justice Mohan Shantangouder permitted him to do so. — Staff Reporter

`Regulate lotteries'

BANGALORE: The Forum of Lottery Retailers submitted a memorandum to the Director of Small Savings and Lotteries Chittaranjan here on Wednesday, urging the Government not to go ahead with the total ban on lotteries as announced in the budget.

Forum president Devidasan said in the memorandum that the Government should strictly regulate the lotteries instead of banning them completely. — Staff Reporter

Power failure

HASSAN: Even after assurance from Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna that there would be no power shortage especially during the examinations, Hassan faced power cuts on Wednesday.

There was no power from 9 to 10 a.m., 11 to 12 noon, 2 to 3 p.m., 4 to 5 p.m. and 5.30 to 6.00 p.m. Students and parents are worried at the frequent power cuts as SSLC examinations have begun and PUC examination will start next week. — Staff Correspondent

Student debarred

BIDAR: One student was debarred and nine were sent out of the examination halls for indulging in malpractices in the SSLC examination in the district on Wednesday.

Ad many as 51 persons were arrested for abetting malpractices, under Section 92 of the Karnataka Police Act. They were warned and later released.

Cases have been filed against 186 persons under the Karnataka Education Act, said a release from Superintendent of Police Ravi S. — Staff Correspondent

Health mela

SHIMOGA: A two-day Shimoga District Suvarna Arogya Mela and Multi Media Campaign opened at the New Government Ayurvedic Hospital on the premises of the Mcgann Hospital here on Wednesday. The mela is being organised under the joint auspices of the district administration, zilla panchayat and the National Rural Health Abhiyan. The health check-up is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which is followed by lectures on health aspects. Cultural programmes are being held in the evening. — Special Correspondent

Killed in accident

MYSORE: A schoolteacher died and 39 people were injured when two State transport buses collided at Yennehole Bridge on Manandawadi Road on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday. The police gave the name of the dead as Manjula, teacher at the Government School in Ahalya village. The injured were admitted to K.R. Hospital.

According to the police, a KSRTC bus, which was on its way to Ahalya village from Mysore collided with another bus proceeding to the city from H.D. Kote after crossing the narrow bridge. — Staff Correspondent

Treatment centre

MYSORE: An animal bite treatment centre has been established at Ashwini Nursing Home, Kantharajurs Road. Persons bitten by any animal, especially dogs can visit the centre for emergency treatment. The hospital will use safe and effective modern tissue culture vaccines and stock vaccines and anti Rabies immunoglobulins (both human and Equine). It is a member of the association for prevention and control of Rabies in India, according to a release by the Hospital. — Staff Correspondent

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad, on Wednesday announced the results of B.P.Ed first semester examinations held during November/ December, 2006. The university had on Tuesday announced the results M.B.A. first semester examinations. — Staff Correspondent
