LUCKNOW: Dissident Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament from Kaiserganj and former Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma faces possible action for revolt against his old friend and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh. Mr. Verma's decision to form the Samajwadi Kranti Dal (SKD) in spite of his conciliatory talks with the Chief Minister, coupled by the move to contest the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections had piqued Mr. Singh. But what appeared to have touched a raw nerve with the Chief Minister was Mr. Verma's decision to pit Reshma Arif on a SKD ticket against his bete noire, State Labour Minister Waquar Ahmed Shah from Bahraich Assembly constituency. Ms. Arif, a former MLA from the Aryanagar constituency in Kanpur (she won in 1989) is the wife of Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister, Arif Mohammad Khan. Incidentally, Mr. Khan had contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections against Mr Verma from the Kaiserganj Parliamentary constituency in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. The dissident MP who became the president of SKD had also announced the names of other candidates, some of them sitting SP MLAs, for contesting the upcoming UP elections. Indications of Mr. Verma being hauled up for disciplinary proceedings was given by UP Transport Minister Naresh Agarwal, who said that the party is not averse to taking action against the MP.
