BJP legislator suspended

HYDERABAD: BJP member G. Kishan Reddy was suspended from the Assembly on Wednesday for stalling the proceedings of the House demanding a debate on the reported Christian religious propaganda on the campus of Padmavathi Mahila University at Tirupati. He moved an adjournment motion on the issue that was disallowed by Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy. The Speaker's repeated appeals to the member not to press his demand and instead meet him in his chambers to explore an alternative went in vain following which he was suspended. - Special Correspondent

Manuscripts found

Srikakulam: Five `taamra patrams' (copper inscriptions) each weighing about one kg were found in a pot near Saanivada village on the outskirts of town on Tuesday. These inscriptions, chained in a ring with a Nandi idol atop it, were found by manual workers who were digging for gravel. According to Srikakulam Revenue Divisional Officer Saluru Venkateswara Rao, the inscriptions seemed to be in Devanagari script. - Special Correspondents

Son `kills' father

ADILABAD: Rajalwar Suraj, an SSC student, allegedly killed his father Dilip, 45, a senior assistant in District Treasury Office here by knifing him in a fit of rage late on Wednesday. Two Town SI P. Sambaiah said Dilip came home drunk and had a fight with his wife. This enraged Suraj who was preparing for his exam in the morning. The injured man died on his way to Nagpur for treatment. A case has been registered. - Special Correspondent

DSC scam: bail for deputy EO, 3 others

KADAPA: Kadapa Junior Civil Judge Veeraiah granted bail to Proddatur Deputy Educational Officer K. Satyanarayana Murthy and three teachers, who were charged with tampering 46 OMR sheets in DSC 2006, as police did not file chargesheet within the stipulated period of 60 days. - Staff Reporter

State to get 100 MW additional power

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh is likely to get additional power allocation out of the "unallocated share" of the Central generation stations in response to repeated pleas made by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy for extra power to meet the present shortage. Rachel Chatterjee, CMD, AP Transco, said that the Central Electricity Authority had recommended an additional allocation of 100 MW from the unallocated share to the State during peak hours and over 250 MW during off-peak hours. - Special Correspondent

30 fishermen for all-India meet

HYDERABAD: Thirty members of the Andhra Pradesh Fisheries and Fishery Workers' Union from 16 districts will participate in the first two-day conference of the All-India Fishermen and Fisheries Workers' Federation beginning on March 24 in Thiruvanantapuram. T.Balakrishna, general secretary, said that among others the conference would demand a ban on fishing within Indian waters by foreign vessels. - Special Correspondent

Awards for NTPC

HYDERABAD: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) units at Ramagundam and Simhadri have bagged national meritorious performance awards instituted by the Union Power Ministry for the years 2004-05 and 2005-06. T. Sankaralingam, Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC and general manager of the respective stations, received the gold awards from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

Tank water poisoned, scores of fish perish

KADAPA: Scores of fish perished due to poisoning of water by unidentified persons in Chinnacheruvu, on the outskirts of Duvvur mandal headquarters. Thousands of dead fish floated on water, as some persons poured pesticide cans into the tank, following rumours that a shark is in the tank. Local youth submitted a memorandum to Duvvur tahsildar Khaja Mohiuddin seeking steps to develop the tank. — Staff Reporter

Five CIs transferred

ANANTAPUR: N. Jayarami Reddy, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Anantapur Range, transferred five Circle Inspectors in the range on Tuesday night. The transferred CIs and their new postings are: John Manohan (Guntakal Rural), Vijaykumar (Anantapur Two Town), Narasappa (Itukalapalli), Nanjundappa (Kuppam) and Ramkrishna (CCS Chittoor). — Staff Reporter

Attack on Siasat editor condemned

KURNOOL: The Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists, Kurnool unit, condemned the attack on the editor of Siasat Urdu daily Jahed Ali Khan in Hyderabad on Tuesday. In a statement, they said Mr. Javed was very progressive in his thinking and worked for educating minority community. Those who did not like his work resorted to the physical assault on the editor, they alleged Union State vice-president M. Kripavaram, K.J. Michael Babu, S. Kasim, K. Harinatha Reddy, Khaleel Ahmed and others signed a statement and faxed it to the Government.

Banana crop in six acres burnt

KADAPA: Banana crop on six acres was destroyed in a fire in Ramaswamipalle in Siddhavatam mandal on Tuesday evening, causing loss of Rs. 4 lakhs. Sparks emanating from 11 kv overhead electric lines destroyed the crop. A fire tender from Kadapa rushed and controlled the flames. — Staff Reporter

Seminar today on SEZs

ELURU: A seminar on "Special Economic Zones and Economic Development" will be held at Sir C.R. Reddy College here on Thursday under the aegis of the Department of Management Studies. K. Arogya Sri launch on March 31

Srikakulam: Officials are making arrangements for the launch of `Arogya Sri' ((health insurance) scheme on March 31. The scheme is being implemented in three districts -- Srikakulam, Mahboobnagar and Anantapur. As part of the scheme, a mega free medical camp will be organised here on the day of its launching. Under this scheme, white card holders are eligible for health insurance benefits worth Rs.1.50 lakhs to Rs. 2 lakhs. - Special Correspondent

Copper inscriptions

Railway amenities

Kakinada: Zonal railway committee member Malakala Suribabu has said that plans are under way for providing more amenities to railway commuters both on trains and at railway stations and the required budgetary allocations are made.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, he said drinking water facility was being ensured at all railway stations and strict instructions were given to railway stalls to sell their goods at the prescribed rates.
