CHENNAI: A total of 460 law graduates, including 57 girls, were enrolled as advocates with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on Wednesday. They were all administered oath at a function presided over by Bar Council Chairman R.K. Chandramohan on the Madras High Court premises. Offering his felicitations to the new members of the Bar, Dravida Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani called upon them to strive to get social, economic and political justice for the members of the under-privileged sections.
"Shun boycotts"
He said the learning process of advocates started only after the enrolment, and urged them to shun court boycotts. Mr. Veeramani wanted advocates to discharge their duties towards society fearlessly, and said they were the guardians of law. M. Naganathan, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Commission, said the 6.6-crore population in Tamil Nadu had only about 60,000 lawyers. Advocates and judicial officers should be sensitive to the concept of social justice, he said. R. Dhanapal Raj, Bar Council of India (BCI) Member representing Tamil Nadu, and the BCT members, A.A. Venkatesan and M. Varadhan, also spoke.
