CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has permitted the reopening of 28 closed dyeing and bleaching units in Tiruppur region. The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru, directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to lift the closure order in respect of these units, after a court-appointed monitoring committee informed that the units had installed sufficient infrastructure to achieve zero discharge. The Judges said, "We are inclined to direct the TNPCB to set aside the closure order and permit them to operate, subject to certain conditions as recommended by the monitoring committee." As for other units, the Bench said TNPCB officials should inspect them. If satisfied with the arrangements, they could revoke the closure orders. The court had ordered closure of the units following public interest litigation petitions from farmers' associations and others, stating that they contributed heavily to the pollution of the Noyyal and the Orathapalayam dam.
