Madras High Court gets four more judges

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has got four more judges. Appointed Additional Judges of the court, the four will be sworn in by Chief Justice A.P. Shah on Thursday.

Of the four new faces, three are from the Bar while one, Justice S. Palanivelu, has been elevated from service.

With this addition, the sitting strength of the court has gone up to a record 46, as against the sanctioned strength of 49.

Thiruneelakantam Sudanthiram

Born in August 1951 in Chengalpattu, he studied at St. Joseph's High School in Chengalpattu.

He did his B.A. in Economics from Madras Christian College and completed his law from Madras Law College in 1975.

He was enrolled as an advocate in February 1976.

After serving in the office of the late N.T. Vanamamalai for 10 years, he started his independent practice in criminal side in the High Court, Sessions Court and various Special Courts.

Kannaiya Veeraraghavan

Born in October 1951 in Tindivanam, he studied in Pachaiyappa's college, the University of Madras and the Madras Law College. He was enrolled in February 1978. He specialised in tax matters, though he practised other branches as well.

After being appointed Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in November 1996, he concentrated only on Central Government cases and rarely appeared in private cases. He became the Senior Panel Lawyer for the Central Government in 2002.

Saminathan Nagamuthu

Born at Madigai village in Thanjavur district in May 1955, he belongs to an agricultural family.

After completing his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Raja Sarfoji Government College in Thanjavur, he obtained his law degree from Madras Law College in 1980.

Till his enrolment in the Bar in January 1981, he was involved in agricultural activities.

He started his practice in Chennai in 1990 and, after the inauguration of the Madurai Bench of the High Court, shifted practice to Madurai in 2004.

Shanmugavel Palanivelu

He was born in May 1955 at Sankarankovil in Tirunelveli district. He did his B.Sc. Zoology from St. John's College in Tirunelveli, Bachelor of Law at Madurai Law College and Master of Law at Annamalai University.

During his college days, he won first prizes in Tamil poetry competitions. He was enrolled as an advocate in June 1981.

He practised under Peppin Fernando in Tirunelveli and Sankaranarayana Pillai in Sankarankovil for seven years. Recruited as Sub-Judge in February 1989, he became a District Judge in 1997.

He is, at present, Registrar-General of the Madras High Court.
