Ramesh Kumar to be taken into police custody

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: The police plan to take into custody some of the accused in the case relating to the seizure of iron balls at Perambalur, particularly Ramesh Kumar, who surrendered before a city magistrate on Tuesday, a senior officer said on Wednesday.

The officer said Kumar allegedly had contacts with Satish, a Sri Lankan Tamil.

He was engaged in soap powder manufacturing and 4.5 tonnes of iron balls were recovered from his house.

He surrendered before the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate at Egmore and was remanded to judicial custody.

More information might be obtained once he was interrogated.

The police were arresting the members of the gang based on the information obtained during interrogation.

The officer said some of the aspects need to be probed thoroughly. One related to the money involved in the entire transaction.

Most of the terrorist organisations in the world had nexus with hawala operators for funding purposes. "Hence, some of the accused need to be thoroughly interrogated."

Seema Basheer of Mannady, who was arrested by the `Q' Branch on Tuesday, had allegedly provided Rs.2 lakh through the hawala channel. Idayathullah, also of Mannady, had earlier been arrested for providing Rs.17.66 lakh through the hawala channel.

Another aspect, the officer said, was to probe whether the persons involved in the case had any link with those arrested in Chennai and Tuticorin in a case of attempt to smuggle iron balls to Sri Lanka in January this year.
