TIRUCHI: Overhead high tension power lines that run along the city roads will soon be replaced by underground cable. About 2,100 metres of lines will be replaced. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will take up the work in a phased manner. Lines in thickly populated areas will be replaced initially. The Government had decided to go in for underground cables in five Corporation limits in the State. The TNEB has initially identified six areas for laying cables, with an investment of about Rs.55 lakh. Rockfort, Nandikovil and Andar Streets, Gandhipuram in Thillai Nagar, Officers' Colony in Puthur, Srinivasa Nagar and Fathima Nagar in Woraiyur have been identified in the first phase, S. Mohan, Chief Engineer (Distribution), TNEB, Tiruchi Region, said. Work has started around Rockfort. The 11 kilovolt (kV) lines will be replaced in the first phase; 33 kV lines will then be replaced. Low-tension lines will be replaced by aerial bunched cables. Household connections will remain unaltered until the entire city gets the underground network. Such cabling will minimise power breakdown owing to snapping of lines, he said. They will also ensure high degree of safety compared to overhead lines.
