CHENNAI: A unique landscaping project is under way at the Children's Park, Guindy. Native tree saplings, including endangered tree species, are being planted as part of the project. Euphorbia (Kalli), fishtail palm (Koondhapanai), Indian laurel (Punnai), an endangered tree species, Jamoon (Naaval), Wood Apple (Vilvam) and bamboo (Moongil) are some of the native tree saplings that have been planted.
Hybrid grass
In an effort to improve the aesthetics of the park, the authorities have planted hybrid grass that is more tolerant to sunlight. Dr. Ranjith Daniels of Care Earth, who identified the native species of tree saplings to be planted, said a contour map of the entire 1.5 acres was prepared to allow free flow of water during the monsoon. Similarly, wherever there was a possibility of stagnation, plants with an affinity for water had been sowed, he said. Another attraction at the Park is the new cascade. A mural decorates the front and back of the cascade. Wetland birds such as flamingos, pheasant-tailed jacanas and herons are depicted on the front. Three species of crocodiles have been portrayed on the rear. The new attraction is being developed at a cost of Rs.20 lakh, the authorities said.
