CHENNAI : The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought a report from the Tamil Nadu Government on the stray dog menace in Chennai's suburbs. A Commission Bench headed by the Chairperson, Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy, took suo motu cognisance of a report in The Hindu , "Stray dog spectre haunts the suburbs," published on Tuesday. It ordered the Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply department to enquire into the matter and send a report to the Commission within three weeks. Meanwhile, the SHRC has sent a reminder to the Nilgiris District Collector to send a report within three weeks regarding an incident in which a seven-year-old boy was bitten by stray dogs near Coonoor. "It is unfortunate that the Collector of The Nilgiris has not sent report already called for by this Commission," the Commission Bench said. Taking suo motu cognisance of a report in a Tamil daily in October last year that the boy Nagaraj of Kattapettu near Coonoor, a student of Class II, was bitten by stray dogs while he was playing with his friends, the Commission had asked for a report from the Collector and the Commissioner, Coonoor Municipality, within three weeks.
Animal birth control
In its report, which had already been sent to the Commission, the municipality submitted that the incident did not occur within its area and it was in a village in Kotagiri taluk, 19 km away. The municipality also said it was administering the animal birth control (ABC) programme.
